Harvesting Home is a project looking to bring an under-served and vulnerable community to the heart of St. Louis’ most flourishing space. The Flora Conservancy is opening a new greenhouse in close proximity to the existing Jewel Box in Forest Park. Harvesting Home proposes a greenhouse that is a showcase of plants as well as a designated space for growing food. Harvesting Home is looking to activate this site for children who are homeless, experience housing insecurities, and need a safe shelter where they can live, learn, and grow. They will learn how to grow their own food, harvest, sell, and store grains, fruits, and vegetables in the greenhouse, harvest house, and bunk house. They will have the chance to earn and save money as well as be a part of a community rooted in health, nature, and self care. This garden and greenhouse will become a hyper-local instance where the community and restaurants benefit from local fresh fruits and vegetables while the youngest and most vulnerable members of the community become more empowered and nurtured.
